Over the last few topics, we studied how the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems work together to fuel the body. But something has to control and coordinate all of this activity — telling the heart when to beat faster, the lungs when to breathe deeper, and the whole body how to react to the world around it. That job belongs to the nervous system. This topic is a regular part of General Science and is frequently tested in ECT, BPS-15, PST, JEST, and other competitive exams.

What is the Nervous System?

The nervous system is the organ system responsible for controlling and coordinating all the activities of the body. It receives information from the environment and from inside the body, processes that information, and sends out signals that tell the body how to respond. The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

The Neuron — Basic Unit of the Nervous System

The neuron, or nerve cell, is the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system. Neurons carry electrical and chemical signals, called nerve impulses, throughout the body at very high speed.

Parts of a Neuron

  • Cell Body — Contains the nucleus and keeps the neuron alive.
  • Dendrites — Branch-like extensions that receive signals from other neurons.
  • Axon — A long, thread-like fiber that carries the nerve impulse away from the cell body toward the next neuron or organ.
Remember: Millions of neurons connect to form a vast communication network, allowing signals to travel from the brain to every part of the body and back again, almost instantly.

Main Divisions of the Nervous System

1. Central Nervous System (CNS)

The central nervous system is the control center of the body, made up of the brain and spinal cord.

  • Brain — Located inside the skull, the brain controls thought, memory, emotions, and voluntary and involuntary body functions. It has three main parts: the cerebrum (thinking, memory, voluntary movement), the cerebellum (balance and coordination), and the medulla oblongata (controls automatic functions like heartbeat and breathing).
  • Spinal Cord — A long bundle of nerve tissue running through the backbone, connecting the brain to the rest of the body and carrying signals in both directions.

2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

The peripheral nervous system consists of all the nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. It has two main types of nerves:

  • Sensory Nerves — Carry information from sense organs (eyes, ears, skin, etc.) to the brain and spinal cord.
  • Motor Nerves — Carry instructions from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands, causing a response.

Reflex Action

A reflex action is a quick, automatic response to a stimulus that does not require conscious thought, such as pulling your hand away from a hot object. Reflex actions are controlled by the spinal cord, which allows the body to react instantly, without waiting for the signal to travel all the way to the brain.

Reflex Arc Path: Stimulus → Sensory Nerve → Spinal Cord → Motor Nerve → Muscle Response. This fast pathway protects the body from harm before the brain even fully processes what happened.

Easy Way to Remember: CNS = Brain + Spinal Cord (the control center); PNS = All the nerves branching throughout the body (the messengers).

Why the Nervous System Matters

Without the nervous system, none of the other organ systems could work together in a coordinated way. It constantly monitors conditions inside and outside the body and sends signals that adjust heartbeat, breathing rate, digestion, and muscle movement as needed. The nervous system works closely with the endocrine system to regulate body functions, and with the muscular system to produce voluntary and involuntary movement. Damage to the nervous system, such as from injury or disease, can affect memory, movement, sensation, or even basic life functions, which is why this system is considered one of the most important in the human body.
