In our last topic, we learned that elements are pure substances made of only one type of atom. But what exactly is an atom made of? To fully understand elements, compounds, and chemical reactions, we need to look inside the atom itself. This topic is a core foundation of chemistry and is frequently tested in ECT, BPS-15, PST, JEST, and other competitive exams.

What is an Atom?

An atom is the smallest particle of an element that still retains all the chemical properties of that element. Atoms are incredibly tiny, far too small to see even with a regular microscope, yet everything around us — from the air we breathe to the chair we sit on — is built from atoms.

Sub-Atomic Particles

Every atom is made up of three basic sub-atomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are found together in the center of the atom, called the nucleus, while electrons move around the nucleus in regions called electron shells or energy levels.

Remember: In a neutral atom, the number of protons always equals the number of electrons, which is why the atom has no overall electric charge — the positive and negative charges balance out.

The Nucleus

The nucleus is the small, dense center of the atom, containing all the protons and neutrons. Although it makes up only a tiny fraction of the atom's total volume, the nucleus contains almost all of the atom's mass, since electrons are so much lighter than protons and neutrons.

Electron Shells

Electrons do not float randomly around the nucleus; they occupy specific energy levels called shells. Each shell can hold only a certain maximum number of electrons before the next shell begins to fill: the first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second shell up to 8, and so on. Electrons in the outermost shell, called valence electrons, are especially important because they determine how an atom reacts and bonds with other atoms.

Atomic Number and Mass Number

  • Atomic Number (Z) — The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. It defines which element the atom is, since every atom of a given element has the same atomic number.
  • Mass Number (A) — The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom (Mass Number = Protons + Neutrons).
Easy Way to Remember: Atomic Number = Protons only. Mass Number = Protons + Neutrons. Number of electrons in a neutral atom = Same as the atomic number.

Isotopes

Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons (same atomic number) but a different number of neutrons, giving them different mass numbers. For example, Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 are both isotopes of carbon, with 6 protons each, but 6 and 8 neutrons respectively.

Why This Topic Matters

Understanding atomic structure is essential for understanding almost every other area of chemistry — from how elements are arranged in the periodic table, to how atoms bond together to form compounds, to how chemical reactions take place. Since valence electrons determine how atoms interact with each other, this topic directly connects to bonding, chemical formulas, and reactions studied later in chemistry.
