Parts of Speech
Subject: English | Topic: Parts of Speech
For TLT, ECT, PST, JEST & All Competitive Exams
Every sentence we speak or write is built from words, and each word plays a specific role in that sentence. Grammar calls these roles Parts of Speech. Understanding them is the foundation of English grammar and is essential before moving on to tenses, sentence structure, and comprehension — making it one of the most frequently tested topics in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.
What are Parts of Speech?
The Parts of Speech are the categories into which words are classified according to their function in a sentence. English has eight parts of speech: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection.

Types of Verbs (Quick Overview)
Verbs can be Main Verbs (action words like eat, write) or Auxiliary/Helping Verbs (is, am, are, has, have, will, can). Verbs can also be Transitive (need an object, e.g., "She reads a book") or Intransitive (do not need an object, e.g., "She sleeps").
Why This Topic Matters
Parts of Speech form the base of sentence formation. Without correctly identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives, students struggle with tenses, subject-verb agreement, and sentence correction — all of which are heavily tested in English sections of TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.
