Herbivores, Carnivores & Omnivores

Subject: Science (Biology)  |  Topic: Animals Based on Food Habits

For TLT, ECT, PST, JEST & All Competitive Exams

We have already learned how green plants make their own food through Photosynthesis. But animals cannot make their own food — they depend on other living things for energy. Based on what they eat, animals are classified into three main groups: Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores. This is a basic but frequently tested topic in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.

What Are Herbivores?

Herbivores are animals that eat only plants, leaves, grass, fruits, or seeds. They do not eat meat. Since they usually graze on plants, they are also called plant-eaters.

Examples: Cow, Goat, Deer, Rabbit, Elephant, Horse, Giraffe.

What Are Carnivores?

Carnivores are animals that eat only the meat/flesh of other animals. They are also called meat-eaters or predators, and they usually hunt other animals for food.

Examples: Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Eagle, Crocodile, Shark.

What Are Omnivores?

Omnivores are animals that eat both plants and meat. They can survive on a mixed diet of fruits, vegetables, and animal flesh.

Examples: Humans, Bear, Crow, Pig, Dog, Ant.

HERBIVORES Eat only plants Cow Goat Deer Rabbit CARNIVORES Eat only meat Lion Tiger Wolf Eagle OMNIVORES Eat plants & meat Humans Bear Crow Pig

Comparison Table

Category Diet Type of Teeth Examples
Herbivores Plants, grass, leaves, fruits Flat, broad molars for grinding Cow, Goat, Deer, Rabbit
Carnivores Meat/flesh of other animals Sharp, pointed canines for tearing Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Eagle
Omnivores Both plants and meat Mixture of sharp and flat teeth Humans, Bear, Crow, Pig
Remember: An animal's teeth are directly adapted to its diet. Herbivores have flat molars for chewing plants, carnivores have sharp canines for tearing meat, and omnivores have a mix of both types since they eat a varied diet.

Adaptations for Food Habits

  • Herbivores: Often have long digestive systems to break down tough plant fibers, and many (like cows) chew cud to digest grass properly.
  • Carnivores: Have sharp claws and canine teeth to catch and tear prey, and a shorter digestive system suited to digesting meat quickly.
  • Omnivores: Have flexible digestive systems and teeth that allow them to eat and digest a wide variety of food, both plant and animal.

Why This Topic Matters

Understanding how animals are classified by their food habits connects directly to other topics like Food Chains, Food Webs, and Ecosystems. Since questions about herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, their examples, and adaptations appear regularly in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams, a solid grip on this topic is essential.
