Simple Machines

Subject: Physics  |  Topic: Simple Machines

For TLT, ECT, PST, JEST & All Competitive Exams

In our earlier topic, we studied Newton's Laws of Motion and how force and mass relate to acceleration. Now let's see how humans use tools to make everyday tasks easier — through Simple Machines. This topic is a core, frequently tested area of Physics in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.

What is a Simple Machine?

A Simple Machine is a basic mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude (size) of a force, making work easier to perform. Simple machines do not reduce the amount of work needed, but they make the force required to do that work smaller, or change its direction.

Remember: A simple machine gives a Mechanical Advantage (MA) — meaning a smaller input force can be used to overcome a larger resistance (load), though the same amount of work is done overall.

Six Types of Simple Machines

Simple Machine Description Example
Lever A rigid bar that pivots around a fixed point (fulcrum) See-saw, scissors, crowbar
Pulley A wheel with a grooved rim used with a rope to lift loads Flagpole, well, crane
Wheel and Axle A wheel attached to a rod (axle) that turns together Doorknob, steering wheel, bicycle wheel
Inclined Plane A flat, slanted surface connecting a lower to a higher level Ramp, staircase, slide
Wedge Two inclined planes joined together, used to split or cut Axe, knife, nail
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder Bottle cap, screw, drill bit

The Lever — A Basic Simple Machine

F Lever (Bar) Load Effort Fulcrum

Key Terms in a Lever

  • Fulcrum: The fixed point around which the lever pivots.
  • Load: The weight or resistance being lifted or moved.
  • Effort: The force applied to move the load.

Mechanical Advantage

Mechanical Advantage (MA) tells us how much a simple machine multiplies the force applied. A machine with a mechanical advantage greater than 1 allows a smaller effort force to move a larger load.

Mechanical Advantage Formula:
MA = Load (Output Force) / Effort (Input Force)

Why This Topic Matters

Simple Machines connect directly to Newton's Laws and the concept of Force, and explain how everyday tools reduce the effort needed to do work. This makes it a practical, frequently repeated topic in the Physics section of TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.
