We have already learned that elements are the basic building blocks of matter, and that atoms combine through Chemical Bonding to form compounds. But with 118 known elements, how do scientists organize and study them systematically? The answer is the Periodic Table, one of the most important tools in Chemistry and a regularly tested topic in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.

What is the Periodic Table?

The Periodic Table is a systematic arrangement of all known chemical elements, organized in order of increasing atomic number (the number of protons in an atom). It was first arranged by the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, based on atomic mass and recurring (periodic) properties, and was later refined into its modern form based on atomic number.

Remember: The word "Periodic" means "recurring at regular intervals." Elements are arranged so that elements with similar properties appear at regular intervals, forming vertical columns.

Groups and Periods

The Periodic Table is arranged in rows and columns, each with its own significance:

  • Groups (Vertical Columns): There are 18 groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence (outermost) electrons and therefore show similar chemical properties.
  • Periods (Horizontal Rows): There are 7 periods. Elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells, but their properties change gradually across the row.

Metals, Non-Metals and Metalloids

Elements in the Periodic Table are broadly classified into three categories based on their properties:

Important Groups to Remember

  • Group 1 (Alkali Metals): Highly reactive metals, e.g., Sodium (Na), Potassium (K).
  • Group 2 (Alkaline Earth Metals): Reactive metals, e.g., Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg).
  • Group 17 (Halogens): Highly reactive non-metals, e.g., Chlorine (Cl), Fluorine (F).
  • Group 18 (Noble Gases): Least reactive, stable gases, e.g., Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar).

What Does an Element's Position Tell Us?

The position of an element in the Periodic Table reveals a lot about it:

  1. Atomic Number: The number of protons, which also equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom.
  2. Group Number: Indicates the number of valence electrons and how reactive the element is likely to be.
  3. Period Number: Indicates the number of electron shells the atom has.
Easy Way to Remember: Go down a group — elements share similar chemical behavior. Go across a period — elements gradually change from metallic to non-metallic properties.
