In our previous topic, we learned that the cell is the smallest unit of life. But cells do not work alone — similar cells group together to form tissues, tissues combine to form organs, and organs work together to form organ systems. This topic is a natural continuation of Cell Structure and is a fundamental part of General Science, frequently appearing in competitive exams such as ECT, BPS-15, PST, JEST, and other similar tests.

What is a Tissue?

A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. Just as many bricks of the same type are used to build one wall, many similar cells combine to form one tissue. For example, muscle cells group together to form muscle tissue, and nerve cells group together to form nervous tissue.

The word "tissue" comes from a French word meaning "to weave," because tissues are like cells woven together into one functional unit.

Types of Tissues (In Animals)

In the human body and other animals, tissues are divided into four main types:

1. Epithelial Tissue

This tissue forms the covering or lining of body surfaces — such as the skin, the lining of the mouth, and the lining of blood vessels. Its main job is to protect the body from injury, germs, and water loss. Epithelial cells are tightly packed together with very little space between them.

2. Connective Tissue

This tissue connects and supports other tissues and organs in the body. Examples include bone, cartilage, blood, and fat (adipose tissue). Unlike epithelial tissue, connective tissue cells are loosely spaced with a lot of material between them, called the matrix.

3. Muscular Tissue

This tissue is responsible for movement in the body. It has the special ability to contract (shorten) and relax. There are three types of muscular tissue — skeletal muscle (attached to bones, controls voluntary movement), smooth muscle (found in organs like the stomach, works involuntarily), and cardiac muscle (found only in the heart).

4. Nervous Tissue

This tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Its main job is to receive information from the environment, process it, and send signals to different parts of the body. The basic unit of nervous tissue is the neuron (nerve cell).

What is an Organ?

When two or more different tissues work together to perform a specific function, they form an organ. For example, the heart is an organ made up of muscular tissue (to pump), nervous tissue (to control the heartbeat), and connective tissue (to hold everything together).

Other examples of organs include the brain, lungs, stomach, kidneys, liver, and in plants, the root, stem, and leaf.

What is an Organ System?

When several organs work together to perform a major life function, they form an organ system. For example, the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines work together to form the digestive system, whose job is to break down food and absorb nutrients.

Major Organ Systems of the Human Body

1. Digestive System

Breaks down food into nutrients the body can absorb and use for energy. Main organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas.

2. Respiratory System

Responsible for breathing — taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Main organs: nose, trachea (windpipe), lungs.

3. Circulatory System

Transports blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body. Main organs: heart, blood vessels (arteries and veins), blood.

4. Nervous System

Controls and coordinates all body activities by sending and receiving signals. Main organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves.

5. Skeletal System

Provides structure and support to the body and protects internal organs. Made up of bones, cartilage, and joints.

6. Muscular System

Works with the skeletal system to allow movement. Made up of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles.

7. Excretory System

Removes waste products from the body. Main organs: kidneys, ureters, bladder, skin.

8. Reproductive System

Responsible for producing offspring and continuing the species. Different in males and females.

Levels of Organization in the Body

All living things (except unicellular organisms) are organized in a specific hierarchy, from simplest to most complex:

Easy Way to Remember: The order always goes — Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ System → Organism. Each level is built from smaller units of the level before it, like building blocks stacking up to form a complete body.

Tissues in Plants

Plants also have tissues, though they are organized differently from animal tissues. The two main categories are:

Meristematic Actively dividing Permanent Fixed, specialized
  • Meristematic Tissue — actively dividing cells found at the tips of roots and shoots, responsible for plant growth
  • Permanent Tissue — cells that have stopped dividing and are specialized for functions like support, transport (xylem and phloem), and protection (epidermis)

Importance of Tissues and Organ Systems

The division of labor among tissues, organs, and organ systems allows the body to function efficiently. Each system has a specific job, but all systems work together and depend on each other — for example, the digestive system provides nutrients that the circulatory system delivers to cells, and the respiratory system supplies the oxygen needed for that process. When any organ or system fails to function properly, it can affect the entire body, which is why understanding this organization is essential in both biology and medicine.
