Prepositions

Subject: English Grammar  |  Topic: Prepositions

For TLT, ECT, PST, JEST & All Competitive Exams

Small words like "in," "on," "at," and "under" might seem minor, but they play a huge role in showing relationships between words in a sentence. These are called Prepositions, and this is a core, frequently tested area of English Grammar in TLT, ECT, PST, and JEST exams.

What is a Preposition?

A Preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word in the sentence — usually relating to time, place, direction, or manner.

Example: The book is on the table.

Types of Prepositions

1. Prepositions of Time

Used to show when something happens.

Preposition Usage Example
At Specific time at 5 o'clock
On Days and dates on Monday
In Months, years, longer periods in July, in 2026

2. Prepositions of Place

Used to show where something is located.

Preposition Usage Example
At A specific point at the bus stop
On A surface on the table
In Inside an enclosed space in the box

3. Prepositions of Direction/Movement

Used to show movement toward a place.

Examples: to, into, onto, towards, through

Example sentence: She walked into the room.

4. Prepositions of Manner

Used to show how something is done.

Examples: by, with, like

Example sentence: He travels by bus.

Remember: A preposition is always followed by a noun, pronoun, or gerund (verb + ing) — never by a plain verb. Example: "Interested in learning" (correct), not "Interested in learn" (incorrect).
